What is Matrix?
Matrix is a quick, strategic memory-and-word game. Levels 1–5 use a 6×6 grid of numbers, while Levels 6–9 switch to a 6×6 grid of letters. You beat the Matrix by finishing the game with a higher total score.
Why play? It trains attention, working memory, spatial recall, and fast decision-making under time pressure.
Health note: Matrix is for practice and fun; it is not a medical test or device.
Levels 1–5: Numbers Mode
- You play on a 6×6 grid with numbers from 1–99.
- Each level contains three rounds and reuses the same set of numbers across those rounds.
- At the start of every round you’ll see a short preview. Tiles flash faster at higher levels. Any tile that turns grey stays visible for the rest of that level.
Your Turn (Numbers Mode)
- Round 1: pick 4 tiles · 12 seconds.
- Round 2: pick 6 tiles · 18 seconds.
- Round 3: pick 8 tiles · 25 seconds.
Finish early to lock in your picks. If the timer hits zero, the Matrix receives extra picks equal to any you didn’t use.
Matrix’s Turn (Numbers Mode)
The Matrix then reveals the same number of tiles you were allowed to pick that round, plus any extra picks you gave it. It typically targets the highest hidden numbers.
Peeks
- You get 9 peeks across Levels 1–5.
- At the start of Levels 6–9, your peeks refresh to 7 for each level.
- Each peek briefly reveals all hidden tiles for about four seconds.
- In numbers mode, tiles you personally revealed before a peek become permanently grey for the rest of the current level. In word levels, peeks only show letters briefly; they do not change tile ownership.
- Cooldown: you can’t use peeks back-to-back; wait for the current peek to finish.
Scoring & Penalties (Numbers Mode)
Your tiles: revealing 1–9 costs 50 points; 10–29 costs 30; 30–39 costs 20. Any number 40+ awards its face value in points.
Matrix tiles: revealing a number below 20 scores the number minus 10. A number 20+ scores its full value.
Levels 6–9: Word Mode
- Each of Levels 6–9 uses one 6×6 letter board for all three rounds in that level.
- Preview: letters appear for about 10 seconds at the start of each round, then hide under coloured tiles.
- Your turn: you always start, with 20 seconds per round. You may spell multiple words before pressing Finished.
- How to spell: build words in a straight line along any of the eight directions. Click only the hidden letters. You may cross grey tiles without clicking them; those visible letters still count.
- No gaps: after your second click fixes the direction, you must uncover hidden letters in order along that line. Clicking a hidden letter that isn’t the next in sequence breaks the attempt.
- Undo: clicked a wrong hidden letter? Click it again to undo, then continue.
- Banking: a valid straight-line word banks immediately and those tiles turn grey.
- Breaking, timing out, or finishing early: any in-progress word cancels, temporary points are removed, and letters touched during that attempt turn grey.
Scoring (Word Mode)
Your valid words: +20 points per letter.
Matrix valid words: +80 points per letter.
Note: cancelled or incomplete words do not score.
Rounds, Levels, and Game Over
- After each round, all revealed tiles turn grey and remain visible.
- When the Next Round button glows and beeps, click it to continue. It stays locked until the Matrix finishes its turn.
- Every level has three rounds. Levels 1–5 use numbers; Levels 6–9 use letters and keep the same letter board across that level’s three rounds.
- After Level 9, Round 3, remaining letters briefly reveal and grey out. Then tap View Results to see the winner.
Tournaments and Awards
MatrixNeon operates a global leaderboard which inherently promotes competitive play.
While no awards or contests are guaranteed, MatrixNeon has reserved an Awards page
for the sole purpose of announcing any future tournaments or awards should
sponsorship opportunities arise. Players are encouraged to check this page
periodically for updates.
-
From time to time, and at MatrixNeon’s sole discretion, a limited-duration challenge
may be announced. Eligibility for any such challenge will be determined by
leaderboard performance metrics, which may include fastest completion time,
lowest negative score, highest score, or other criteria specified at the time of
announcement.
-
If an award is offered, the form, value, and terms of redemption will be specified
on the Awards page. Awards may be restricted to certain jurisdictions and are void
where prohibited by law. MatrixNeon assumes no responsibility or obligation to
provide awards to players from excluded regions.
-
The Awards page (accessible from the dropdown menu) will contain the official terms
of any announced tournament, including start and end dates, award details, and
availability. Absent such posting, no awards are being offered.
-
Only registered and logged-in players will be eligible to receive awards if and when
they are offered. In the event a declared winner does not hold an active account,
MatrixNeon may, at its discretion, reassign the award to the next highest-ranking
eligible player.

If tie-breaking is required in an announced challenge, the earliest timestamp of the
tied top score will determine ranking. Eligibility requirements (e.g., minimum age of
18) and restrictions will be specified at the time of announcement. Limit one award
per person per tournament.
Age & Health
Age Requirement: Matrix is intended for players aged 18 and over.
Individuals under the age of 18 must only access or play the game under the
supervision and with the consent of a parent or legal guardian. By participating,
players confirm that they meet the applicable age requirement or are under
appropriate adult supervision.
Photosensitive Epilepsy Warning: A small percentage of individuals may
experience seizures, dizziness, or other adverse effects triggered by certain visual
patterns or flashing lights, even if no prior history of epilepsy exists. If you
or a family member has epilepsy, consult a physician before playing.
Discontinue use immediately and seek medical advice if you experience symptoms such as
dizziness, altered vision, eye or facial twitching, involuntary movements,
disorientation, nausea, or convulsions. To reduce risk, play in a well-lit room,
maintain a safe distance from the screen, take regular breaks, and stop immediately if
you feel unwell.
